In which area of the UK can you commonly find red squirrels?

Red squirrels are primarily found in the Highlands of Scotland, making this area an essential habitat for them. This region offers the dense forests and varied landscape that are suitable for their survival. The Highlands are also less affected by the introduction of the non-native grey squirrel, which has led to a decline in red squirrel populations in many parts of the UK.

In contrast, while red squirrels used to be more widespread, their populations have dwindled in regions like East Anglia, the Lake District, and Wales, mainly due to habitat loss and competition with the grey squirrel.
